This book is tiny in volume but large in contents. It does not only provide the definitions of the fundamental concepts but also clear explanations and motivations of why must everything be defined that way, which are not always found in other texts. Plenty of the right examples help you build the right intuitions. The case studies at the end put everything into context and prepare you for CS texts on semantics, type theory, etc.
If you want to UNDERSTAND this wonderful theory read this book!

This is an excellent introduction to category theory, not just for computer scientists, but for mathematicians as well. The author has a very clear writing style--it's evident that he writes to help people to understand the subject, and not to show off his knowledge. The examples illustrating various principles are easy to understand, especially the ones used to illustrate adjoints, arguably one of the more difficult concepts in category theory. This book also comes with a very valuable annotated bibliography, enabling one to intelligently choose from the many books and articles in this burgeoning field.

Read this book before you tackle Mac Lane.

Which stands for "Compact, Complete, and Comprehensible".
It is fairly easy to read, has every basic aspects of Category Theory, and has a lot of good examples.
If you would like to know the first step of Category Theory and you are in CS realm, this book is the one you have to try.

This encyclopedia created an incitefull look at a great mans work and an intersting look at his life. Great photography.

Not only would I highly recommend this novel to all Fantastic Four fans, I would also strongly recommend it to those who are fans of Mr. Fantastic. This book proved how he could pull off having his own solo limited or ongoing comic series. Also worth mentioning was how the characterizations of all members of the F4 were done right, unlike in their current comic series. If you have only to buy one Fantastic Four novel in your lifetime, make this one it.

I think for the last several years now, the Fantastic Four novels have been better written then the comic. Case in point is this novel by Pierce Askegren. This writer makes good use of many leading FF characters that first appeared in the Stan Lee/Jack Kirby FF issues. The mad thinker is a complex villain here, Black Bolt and the Inhumans play important roles in the story, and the Fantastic Four are presented as the human heroes that they are. No fancy gimmicks here. It's a straight forward story from start to finish, and I'm very grateful for that.

Michael Jan Friedman's _Redemption of the Silver Surfer_ has been getting all the attention, but I think Pierce Askegren's _Countdown to Chaos_ is even better. The characterizations are all perfect, especially the Thing, and the plot is _much_ more interesting (and complicated!) than the usual villain-takes-over-the-world kind of stuff. Plus, it's much better than the comic book has been in about fifteen years. Don't let this great book pass you by!

This book is well written, thorough and insightful. Mr. Kelley's approach to teaching tennis can be used by any coach, parent or teacher trying to help any athlete learn the fundamentals of any sport. Having coached youth sports for over twenty years I can only say that I wish I had discovered this wonderful book sooner!

Mr. Kelley is an outstanding teacher of tennis. Any parent who is trying to teach their child how to play tennis will benefit from reading this book. Mr. Kelley has a knack for making things easy. Many of the terms will be easy for your child to learn and then apply to learning tennis. I really enjoyed the book and have used many of his suggestions with my own children.

A recent move to a home near tennis courts coincided with my grandson coming of "tennis age." Reading Mr. Kelley's superb book reacquainted me with this beginning stage that I had undergone so many years ago. Not having kept up with the game myself, I was also able to relearn and rethink many aspects of the game which I'd consigned to "body memory" years ago, and had perhaps developed to the "sloppy" or "lazy" stage. Now I know how to do it the right way again and how to convey the correct techniques and methods to a six year old. The drills were especially helpful; and the history, glossary, and appendicies were all bonuses. If my grandson keeps up with the game, I'll know that, by having read this book and followed the instructions, I didn't teach him the wrong stuff or "screw up" his development. We had fun, too.

JK Lasser's Guide To Mutual Fund Investing is a "must have" for anyone like me who is trying to decide how to invest their 401k/403b. It explains"new" funds, convertible and REIT funds, and the difference between index funds and managed funds and when to use them. This book will help you avoid some of the mistakes that trip up the average investor. Before I read this, I didn't realize how badly the average investor does.  

This book helps take the mystery out of mutual fund investing. In my case, (investing for retirement), I'm trying to create a portfolio that is balanced, diversified, and smart. This book has given me the tools I need to make the right choices. The book is well written and the topics it covers are clearly presented. It was an enjoyable read (surprising!). I HIGHLY recommend this book.

Great investment guide and resource book--well written and very understandable. I wish I had a resource like this 25 years ago. Read this book to understand the reasoning behind indexing, why your portfolio should be balanced in the ways described, and to learn about the new fund effect as an effective way to maximize investment gains. Also learn about convertibles, REITs and other interesting and little understood investment topics.

....As a thirty five year professional in the investment industry, I found this book, Pick Winning Mutual Funds, written by the same authors who wrote Winning with Index Funds, a very valuable book for anyone, like a seasoned professional such as myself, to a first time investor.I wish a book like this had been available when I started in the investment business in 1964. These two authors broke new ground again.This is the first book that acually explaines how one can go about finding the right funds that fit their protfolio.It also shows how to stop paying high up front sale charges and excessive annual fees. The well researched book is full of information I've never come across before--like how to reduce risk and where to get good on-line information about funds. And, one of the most important things I learned was when to use index funds(and which ones) and when to use managed funds. It's a great book for someone who is trying to figure out which mutual fund in which to invest... ...........I strongly recommed it..!!!

As a corporate psychologist, I was pleased to find the serious research underlying this book, although it should be just as appealing to new students and the lay public. It is an excellent combination of literature review and applied science. Particularly valuable are the mappings of Big Five personality factors to various leadership styles (Kotter, Bennis, etc.) and 200 managerial competencies. Additional chapters do the same for approaches to learning, team building, interpersonal relationships, sales skills, and more. This book should soon be required reading within this field.

This is a must have book for any consultant or any individual interested in conducting personality research.

I have been working in the industry for a number of years and I have finally found the one book that seamlessly integrates science and practice. The research is insightful and the recommendations applicable. The Howard's have done a fabulous job of understanding the needs of today's organizational psychologist/management consultants and created the ultimate resource guide and complimentary materials.

Because of this book, I am certain that I am providing my clients with better service, presentation and product! A great read, resource and thought-provoking tool.

Being a doctoral student in organizational leadership, I have read most of the books written about personality research, and especially those that focus on leadership behavior. Examining leadership competencies, learning styles, team development, and the application of personality assessment with the book has "simply" further opened my eyes to the importance of improving interpersonal awareness in the organization. The Howard's book is the first that I feel approached the subject from an understandable and practical basis. I use the book daily as I write my dissertation as a reference for practical applications of personality testing with the NEO-PI-R, and how to apply what I have learned from my data in the topic of leadership. It was a pleasure to find a book that allowed me to peruse the table of contents and move right to a section that applied to my current research without having to struggle. A nice thing that the authors have done is to provide a common language that can be used in the workplace with regard to understanding individual differences. This can set the stage for better communication among team members. In addition, I have found that as people understand themsleves better and can speak a similar language it can improve the flow of overall understanding in the organization. The book has opened my eyes to better acknowledge individual differences within teams, and to believe that there is no perfect solution when choosing leaders and team members. The world must incorporate these important individual differences effectively into their organizational structure; so as opposed to sujectively wandering through the personnel challenges of today's workplace, understanding these differences and blending the right mixtures of personality traits can make a difference in determining success. I applaud their efforts, and look for more.

Dr. Scranton is an excellent author. Playing Hurt is well written and captivating.

He brings you behind the scenes of the NFL, and describes the entire process of an athlete's life in well written detail. Medical knowledge is helpful, but not reqired. You can reference the medical terminology on the internet if need be.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is curious about sports medicine, or even the casual NFL fan (like me).

The descriptions of some injuries may be difficult to those without a background in common athletic injuries (eg. buckethandle cartilage tear). But, this is a great insight into one team physician's experiences in the NFL. I would agree with one review that said he focuses on his drinking, but having limited exposure to the world of sports medicine, as a collegiate student trainer, this is very much a part of the atmosphere. He discusses the bonding of a medical staff in a bar setting, that hazy arena where information on potential players is shared and war stories abound.

I would whole heartedly recommend this book to anyone that is even the slightest bit interested in the world of sports medicine.

The title of the book caught my eye. I see all these players getting hurt on Sundays. What is really happening? As I read the book I found it was something different. The medical aspect servers more as a backdrop into how the NFL works. Stranton talks about what really happens at the combines, what is draft day like, how do game days go, etc.

On the down side the book drags in a few places. He talks too much about all the drinking he does. Also, the book focuses almost exclusively on the Seahawks. On the up side he does not pull his punches. He is not afraid to say so owner or coach is a jerk.

Fun quick read.

Chuck Pierce's testimony deserves to be heard. Painful as it is, each of Chuck's experience forms a layer of revelation until his personal life becomes a shining pearl before God. The author realized he needs to transfer his experience to other believers. Generously, he has collected his experiences and compiled them into this block-buster book. So this book is actually a treasure chest that is filled with spiritual truth.

Let it be known also that the message written here comes from the mind of an anointed strategist. A strategist is full of feasible plan. Lies within this book is a plan Chuck believes that will enable us to reclaim our lost inheritance. Laced with this plan are comprehensive guidelines and strategies that can be implemented immediately too.

By setting the equilibrium of truth, the message of this book is a wake up call to those who do not understand the full power of their spiritual rights and authority. When believers are not aware of this, they are walking blindly on thin ice ! This is Chuck's attempt to let us be aware of our circumstances and get us right on track.

If one thing I have learned from Chuck's message is that when we live under the clutches of legalism and iniquities, we can still be believers but very much trapped in the cage of humanistic guilt. This is definitely not the pathway to victory.

Upon completing this book, I can conclude that Chuck has weaved his tears and sacrifices over the years into this wonderful gift to us. I can say that this book will not only reinvigorate your faith, it will reinstate those who have lost their strength and faith in life.

Chapter after chapter left me begging for more and longing to know the promises my Lord has made for me in exchange for the promises I make to Him. What is your inheritance? In Chapter One, simply put, "He longs for our latter days to be greater than our former days. God's plan for you "I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly." The hightlight for me had to be Chapter Six which included a nine-step process to help you secure your inheritance. It's not easy, it's a committment, and it takes some discipline. But anybody, absolutely everybody can do it and receive what God has intended personally for them since before the beginning of time. Also enlightening was Chapter Four, Glory to Glory. This chapter helped clarify my own experiences in closeting myself quietly in prayer, God's Words which burn into my brain and my heart, and the Holy Spirit, which I pray to work within me that I may lead a more Christian life. It includes quotes from such notables as Rick Joyner, C.S. Lewis, Dutch Sheets, Donald Whitney and my own Pastor, Jack Hayford. It also includes forwards by C. Peter Wagner and Cindy Jacobs. This book will leave you vibrant, radiant and ready to go to work for the success and well-being that is promised to you by the words of Jesus. Be sure to have your Bible beside you because there are many references that you will want to read to help clarify and yes, validate. Many things that Chuck Pierce said sounded too good to be true. But after reading them, then reading the Biblical cross-references, I knew that it must be true! I am a brand new baby Christian and now, not only do I look forward to growing up straight and tall in Christ, but also to grow old with Him and make Him as proud of me as I am to know Him

Possessing Your Inheritance is an instructional book. Ms. Wagner and Mr.Pierce supplies its readers an outline on how to possess your inheritance. The book gives the readers instruction on how to possess all the Lord has promised. An eye opener to our position in Christ, the detailed steps on how to deal with the reader's issues in their life and the freedom readers acquire through all this wealth of knowledge.

I found this book to be totally enthralling and it scared the hell out of me. Set in the mysterious old south city of Savannah, it will make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck. You definately should read with ALL the lights on.

I would give this book to anyone who likes to read scary or ghost story books and show them a new meaning to possession.

The entire book is creepy but some parts are totally scary and scared the hell outa me.

For people who love thrillers/ghosts/deamon books, get this one.

I work in data communications and until I read this book I found the folks at the phone company baffling.

This book captures well the technical culture of the phone company right before the Internet took off.

A lot of really great explanation of how things like analog modems work- with a lot of great pictures.

This book covers physical, information theoretic, and electronic issues in data communication. While the book is a bit dated, the classic material really hasn't changed that much. Pierce and Nolls give a masterful treatment of this material at an introductory to intermediate level. If you are looking for a book packed with equations and proofs or a book devoid of such things you will be disappointed. Rather, the book is heavy on qualitative understanding, with some analysis and equations following from the qualitative understanding.

When I got this book, I picked it up in a bargain bin, and thought that it was worth a ...gamble that it might have some content (it looked a little too accessible, not deep). After reading this book and Pierce's (same author) Introduction to Information Theory: Signals Systems and Noise, I have a new appreciation. Pierce is the kind of guy who can get a point across, and give an understanding of some deep concepts. This book is great, and I'm really glad I have it.

Given that electronic signals are central to both artificial computers and biological nervous systems, this easy-to-read reference on electronic signals may prove useful to readers of many backgrounds.
